Early Childhood Librarian

Ela Area Public Library District

The Ela Area Public Library is looking for an Early Childhood Librarian who enjoys working with children and their parents and caregivers.  This librarian establishes lifelong library users by offering high quality, engaging, and fun early literacy experiences. Strong candidates will be creative and innovative with excellent customer service skills and a desire to work in an active, team-oriented, and collegial department (posted 8/30/16)..

Primary Position Responsibilities:

  • Encourage and model a love of stories, books, learning, and exploring.
  • Perform reference and readers’ advisory at the Children’s Reference Desk.
  • Participate in collection development of children’s print and non-print materials.
  • Promote early literacy practices to families both inside and outside the library.
  • Develop crafts/activities for the Department’s activity table.
  • Develop and present story times for children ages 5 and under including programs for babies and caregivers.

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science with coursework in children’s services. December 2016 graduates are also welcome to apply.
  • At least one year of work experience in a library
  • Positive attitude working in partnership with team members
  • Ability to make decisions and judgments independently at a professional level
  • Intellectual curiosity
  • Knowledge of child development and early literacy skills
  • Spanish, Polish, or Chinese language skills a plus

Position Hours: Full-time (37.5 hours/week), including one evening per week and one weekend per month.

Salary: $42,224 or higher depending on qualifications and experience. Full benefits including four weeks of vacation and participation in IMRF.

Head of Popular Materials

Ela Area Public Library District

The Ela Area Public Library District, located in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago in the community of Lake Zurich, seeks a collaborative, progressive team leader to join the organization as the Head of Popular Materials.

Rated as a Five Star Library by Library Journal, we have developed leading edge services for library patrons including a makerspace, digital media labs, and the circulation of experiential materials.
The Popular Materials Department, staffed by a dedicated team of individuals, encompasses a wide range of popular materials and services including a newly developed makerspace, readers’ advisory, teen services, passport processing, adult fiction, and AV. We are looking for an individual who readily embraces innovation and will help us find ways to expand our services to address our community’s emerging needs (posted 9/2/16).

Position Summary:
The Head of Popular materials reports to the Assistant Director and participates in the strategic planning process as a collaborative member of the management team. Additionally, this position manages a work group of 12 direct and 4 indirect staff members.

Significant duties include:

  • Management of department personnel
  • Carrying out meeting room policies
  • Collection development for adult fiction
  • Promotion of Popular Materials services and resources
  • Management of Passport Services

Requirements:

  • MLS from an ALA accredited institution
  • Five years of professional public library experience
  • Demonstrated abilities in management, supervision, and service to the public
  • Commitment to superior customer service and communication

Starting Salary: $56,719 annually with full benefits, including four weeks of vacation and participation in IMRF. Night and weekend availability.
