Part-time Reference Librarian-Genealogy Specialist

The Ela Area Public Library in Lake Zurich, IL is looking for a Part-Time Reference Librarian-Genealogy Specialist to join our forward-thinking Adult Reference Department. The Adult Reference desk provides non-fiction reference and readers’ advisory services and technology assistance. The desk is also responsible for the Library’s study rooms, Digital Media Labs and VR headsets.

The Part-Time Reference Librarian will provide reference service at a busy reference desk, utilizing a large array of print reference resources, online databases, and the Internet. The position will also be required to perform basic computer troubleshooting and assistance with copiers, printers, MS Office, and the Internet.

The Genealogy Specialist will provide programming for patrons, including the Genealogy Interest Group and genealogy research classes.  The position will also be required to represent the library at a variety of events and/or provide programming to community groups and serve as a liaison to the Ela Historical Society and Museum. 

The ideal candidate will have a commitment to excellent public service and be comfortable with a variety of reference resources and technologies.

Requirements

  • MLS from ALA-Accredited Institution. Current MLS students are also welcome to apply
  • Knowledge of basic reference resources and practices, including online sources and searching
  • Knowledge of technology applications relative to public library reference services
  • Experience with genealogy research preferred
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills
  • Spanish, Polish, or Chinese language skills a plus

Position Hours: 12-15 hours per week. Availability to work nights and weekends as needed.

Salary:  $20.31 per hour

Outreach Assistant

Ela Area Public Library District

The Ela Area Public Library in Lake Zurich, IL has an opening for an Outreach Assistant. This position is responsible for serving the Ela Library outreach sites and providing internal support for Outreach events/programs. (Posted 10/15/20).

Responsibilities include:

  • The preparation & delivery of materials to various skilled and assistive living facilities within the Ela Library district
  • Providing support for Outreach programming within the building, virtually and in the community
  • Assisting with the home delivery service to patrons residing in their own homes

Requirements
High School diploma. Some college required

Knowledge and Skills

  • Ability to push heavy book carts; lift and carry heavy book bags within the library and to and from Outreach sites
  • Comfortable working with older adults as well as residents in a skilled and/or assisted living facility
  • Excellent communication skills to represent the library in off-site locations
  • Strong sense of self direction yet eagerness to work as part of a team
  • Strong comfort level with technology, especially digital and virtual formats. Willingness to learn new technology skills
  • Valid Driver’s License and access to a personal vehicle

Position Hours
12 hours per week: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday with occasional Monday morning availability. Flexibility to work additional shifts including evenings and weekends.

Pay: $17.52/hr

Part-time Children's Librarian (Fill-in)

The Ela Area Public Library District, located in the northwest suburbs of Chicago in the community of Lake Zurich, seeks a fill-in librarian to join the Children’s Department. (Posted 10/15/20).

Primary Position Responsibilities:

  • Performs reference and reader’s advisory at the Children’s Reference Desk
  • Assists with programs, kits, craft preparation, and weeding of the collection
  • Signs patrons up for programs

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree (competed or almost complete) in Library and Information Science with coursework in children’s services
  • Ability to work easily and naturally as part of a close-knit team
  • Reliable, with excellent time management skills
  • Comfort working with children of diverse backgrounds and abilities
  • Ability to work independently and adapt to changing safety protocols and schedules
  • Avid reader of children’s literature
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, familiarity with an ILS, and the ability to learn other software and cloud-based applications as related to the position

Position Hours:
One 4-hour shift per week (most likely one evening) and one weekend (Saturday and Sunday) per month.

Children's Librarian

Ela Area Public Library District

The Ela Area Public Library District, located in the northwest suburbs of Chicago in the community of Lake Zurich, seeks a collaborative librarian to join our team.  The librarian in this position develops and presents programs related to technology and the arts in the Children’s Department as well as in the library’s makerspace, Forge.  Please note that during the time of COVID-19, our programs have shifted to different formats:  virtual live and recorded sessions and “take home” kits. Primary Position Responsibilities:

  • Performs reference and readers’ advisory at the Children’s Reference Desk
  • Develops and presents programs for children and families in a variety of formats
  • Manages the Curiosity Kit collection and participates in other collection development work
  • Prepares crafts/activities for the activity table
  • Stays up-to-date on technology trends and opportunities related to children’s services in public libraries and shares these with library staff
  • Creates social media content related to children’s services

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science with coursework in children’s services
  • Demonstrated experience or interest in arts and crafts, maker projects, or other fun technology for children
  • Experience working with children, parents, and caregivers

Position Hours: 37.5 per week, including rotating weekends and evenings

Salary: $45,900 annually with full benefits, including 4 weeks of vacation and participation in IMRF.

Part-Time Security Monitor 

Ela Area Public Library District

The Ela Area Public Library is seeking an energetic individual to serve as a part-time Security Monitor. This position is responsible for helping to maintain a welcoming atmosphere for all library visitors. The ability to work as part of a team with a positive attitude even when dealing with problems is highly desired. (Posted 8/26/20).

Primary Responsibilities Include:

  • Makes routine inspections of the interior building and exterior grounds to maintain the safety and security of all library patrons, property, and staff.
  • Continually observes activity in the library and on library property to maintain an appropriate environment consistent with the library’s policies. Completes Incident Reports as needed.
  • Follows established procedures and assists with vacating, closing, and securing the building.

  • Communicate positively, clearly & effectively with all age groups

Position Hours: Monday, Tuesday, Friday 3:00pm- 6:00pm
                             Alternating weekends Saturday 10:00am-2:00pm, Sunday 12:00pm-5:00pm
                             Ability to stay beyond closing hours if necessary

Salary: $15.12 per hour, depending on qualifications
