Event and Makerspace Programmer

Ela Area Public Library District

The Ela Area Public Library seeks an energetic, creative Event and Makerspace Programmer to lead and enhance public services and community engagement. (Posted 8/7/18)

The Ela Area Public Library is a progressive and customer service focused library located in the community of Lake Zurich, in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago. The makerspace is an open, shared space for all ages, and is located adjacent to the Library’s teen space. It includes a 3D printer, Silhouette Cameo, craft supplies, sewing machines, Raspberry Pi kits and more.

Responsibilities include:

  • Plans, implements, and evaluates library programs for adults and families under the direction of the Public Information Coordinator.
  • Develops, teaches, and promotes innovative technology and maker programs both in the library and in the community.
  • Participates as a member of library-wide committees, including the social media team, Forge, and programming committee.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Candidates must be self-starting and capable of working autonomously on assigned projects with excellent time management skills. 

Ability to:

  • Assess community needs and interests for programming and events
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with appropriate community contacts, program providers, and programming organizations
  • Stay current with evolving technologies and training techniques for adults and teens
  • Teach hands on activities in a variety of settings and formats
  • Work collaboratively with Library staff

Requirements: Bachelors Degree required. MLS preferred.  Previous programming experience required, preferably in a public library setting. Proficiency with Mac and PC operating systems required.  Strong community involvement and local contacts are highly desirable.

Position Hours: 20 hours per week. Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.

Starting Salary: $18.68 per hour. Benefits include vacation, sick and personal time and participation in our IMRF Retirement Program.

Circulation Assistant I

Ela Area Public Library District

The Ela Area Public Library in Lake Zurich, IL has an opening for a Circulation Assistant. (Posted 7/24/18).

Responsibilities include:

  • providing courteous and professional customer service to patrons and staff in person and on the phone
  • performing duties of checking in and out library materials including Interlibrary loans
  • assisting patrons with self checkouts, feeding all book drop items through the sorter, and emptying bins and putting items on appropriate carts
  • checking for missing or damaged items
  • maintaining the drive-up holds shelf and processing all in-house and CCS holds for distribution and circulation including pick-list holds
  • preparing and returning all items from other libraries for daily pick-up
  • registering and issuing library cards using District and Lake County Tax Assessor maps and records
  • maintaining patron records keeping all information private and up-to date
  • collecting fines for overdue materials
  • verifying price and collecting payment for lost or damaged items
  • accurately collecting fines and making change for patrons
  • monitoring and answering Circulation questions that come over WebChat
  • identifying and sending damaged items to Technical Services for repair or discard

Requirements:

High School diploma or equivalency, previous work experience, computer experience desirable. Spanish, Polish, or Chinese language skills a plus.

Knowledge and Skills - Ability to:

  • take personal responsibility for making sure customer needs are met

  • work long periods at the circulation counter, using a computer terminal and keyboard
  • bend, reach, and lift

Position Hours

13.75 hours per week

Wednesday: 3:00pm-9:00pm, Friday: 1:30pm-6:00pm and one weekend per month

Information Desk Assistant

The Ela Area Public Library is seeking a friendly, energetic, and self-motivated applicant with exceptional customer service skills. Our library strives to be a welcoming center for our community and this position is responsible for creating a positive library experience at an extremely busy information desk. Responsibilities include general reference, passport services, reader’s advisory, and technology assistance. This is an 8-15 hour per week position with a work schedule that requires daytime, evening, and weekend hours. (Posted 7/11/18).

Responsibilities:

  • Provides general reference and reader’s advisory service.
  • Greets and assists patrons, provides informational and directional assistance in person and via phone.
  • Processes passport applications as a certified Passport Agent.
  • Assists patrons with retrieving equipment from the Forge.
  • Takes program sign-ups, accepting payment where required, giving receipts and handling cancellations.
  • Takes applications and accepts payments for the meeting room.
  • Assists patrons with the use of the copier/scanner and performs troubleshooting.
  • Takes voter registrations, if eligible.
  • Attends staff meetings, staff training days, and department meetings.
  • Answers questions about using technology including library apps, mobile devices, the internet, and word processing.
  • Fills in for absent coworkers

Requirements:
2 years of college, one year of work experience with public interaction and customer service experience required. Library experience preferred. Spanish, Polish, or Chinese language skills a plus.

Knowledge and Skills - must have the ability to:

  • Deal with multiple tasks effectively and efficiently.
  • Interact with patrons courteously, skillfully and accurately.
  • Work effectively with co-workers in a collaborative, team-based organization.
  • Learn use of telephone system and maintain standards of phone service.

Position Hours: 8-15 hours per week, flexible availability needed. Schedule includes daytime, evening, and weekend shifts. Schedule subject to change from week to week.

Children’s Librarian

The Ela Area Public Library is looking for a creative, kind, and dedicated Children’s Librarian who enjoys programming and sharing a love for stories, books, learning, and exploration. (Posted 7/10/18)

Primary Position Responsibilities

  • Develops and presents programs for children and families
  • Performs reference and readers’ advisory at the Children’s Reference Desk
  • Finds and books performers for library programs
  • Develops and prepares crafts/activities for the activity table
  • Participates in collection development

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science with coursework in children’s services
  • Experience working with children

Salary: $22.09 per hour (43,068 annually). Benefits include health insurance, four weeks vacation, sick, personal, holiday, and enrollment in the IMRF Retirement Program.
